N is for Neighbors

is for Neighbors

It helps if they are good ones.
It also helps if we are good ones.
Growing up there were some very special people next door: Mr. and Mrs. Adolfs. They were older and were like a second set of Grandparents to me.
I remember Mother telling me that when we moved in beside them that Mrs. Adolfs was really worried about a family with "all those children". She told Mother that the first day she saw the laundry on the line and "all those nice white shirts" that it must be a good family. She loved all of us ever since.

MY sister and I would go to her house to have tea parties. Well, we thought they were tea parties, she would give us something to drink and she always had almond windmill cookies. (I still think of her every time I eat one.)
One day in particular we were at their house and I asked if she had any candy. She had a "milk glass" candy dish with a lid on her coffee table and she usually had it filled. Thing is, I had sneaked a peak before asking so I knew it was full. She figured that out quickly and told me that yes, she had candy, but since I had lifted the lid to check without asking first, that Icould not have any. She gave my sister a piece to eat right in front of me. I was crushed for a while, but soon I realized that she was almost a real grandma to do something like that and I loved her even more.

Her husband passed away later on, and she moved north to live with family. I wrote to her for a few years, but then lost touch. I miss those days of childhood.

You never know what influence you can have on a child. She was just a next door neighbor who opened her home and made children feel welcome.

When Steve and I moved into this neighborhood we were surrounded by elderly people. Widows and widowers were our neighbors. Our boys were the only children in our cluster of houses and they were loved.

Mr. Lindley lived next door and of all things, he had a trapeeze type swing in his garage. It was left over from his days of raising children and our boys loved it. The boys also loved his little dog Pal, and would spend much time in his yard.
Mrs. Nicholas lived across the street and she loved visits from the two little Walter boys. She would get rides to the mall and she often brought back special cookies for the boys. I remember one time the cookies were huge teddy bear cookies that were dipped in chocolate. The boys loved them.

Then there was Wilma.
Wilma moved across the street when the boys were young. Joel was still taking two naps a day. She became a part of our family immediately. She loved flowers, and some of the plants in my yard came from her, although I was told you can't say thank you for plants or they won't grow. She taught me how to make peanut brittle, although I never mastered it. She also told many stories of the years she spent with her husband and of her teaching career. She was a great friend.
Her heart and health deteriorated and she is no longer with us.
The family invited me over the night after she passed so I could pick out treasures from her home. We are blessed with many precious items that were special to her and now are special to us.

Think about your neighbors. They are a part of your lives, and can bless you tremendously. I also need to think about us. Are we the same type of neighbors?

For Tom and Lois:

I have heard the old quote :  "Some people come into our lives and quickly go.  Some stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts."

I must say I am feeling those footprints right about now.  Today I have thought a lot about some very special people in our lives.

I need to share tonight about friends who will be moving far far away very soon.  Tom and  Lois came into our lives about 12 years ago.  That is my best estimate.  I first met them at our church.  I remember one particular night I saw them, I don't think they saw me though.  They were sitting in our sanctuary, pretty much alone, and were praying.  That attracted me to them, and I was really thankful that before long they became a part of our small group.  We had a great small group.  It became an intimate and trusting group.  One where we could share our deepest longings and our most painful hurts.  We learned that Tom and Lois had recently spent over a year in the Ukraine as missionaries and had fallen in love with two little boys.  I still remember their names, and often I say a little prayer for them.  We all prayed back then that God would find a way to bring those boys into their lives permanently.    It was not to be.  God had plans unfolding, but we just did not know it yet.

Our group grew closer and closer and sometimes we even let Tom and Lois know where we were meeting (inside joke)

Nine years ago, my family experienced a major house fire, and this group carried us through that time and gave us a welcome home party after our renovations.  I still have the little bear fireman on my kitchen counter that Lois gave me to "protect" my kitchen from future fires.

We waited, prayed, and cried for them and with them as God revealed His amazing plan and brought two perfect sons into their lives after a lengthy return trip to the Ukraine.  Watching this incredible family has been a joy.  This was always meant to be.

We prayed for other events in their lives as well. We prayed for health issues and  for Tom to find a good job, (God , can we have a "do over" on that one?  We meant a good job close to us!)

Tom and Lois have touched our own family in a profound way.  They love our boys and have devoted themselves to both senior high and college ministries.  Our boys have experienced genuine love and acceptance from both of them.  You know how special you feel about someone when they  genuinely love your children.

As my health issues unfolded during the last year,  I was touched by the little things that Lois did for me.  She gave me a bracelet early on when my cancer was diagnosed to show me how God could make beauty from ashes.  When she learned that I was having trouble sleeping due to my fears and concerns, she made 2 music cds for me.  One for my days, and one for my nights.  Just today I was listening to one of them, and I thought so much about Lois.  I thought about how she ministered to me in such a real way.  About how she saw a raw and real need and met it.

This is a couple that actually my husband and I have spent very little time with in the last year, but a couple that have made a huge difference in our lives.  They are leaving our area and I know we will miss their touch on our lives in a terrible way.  The northwest will be  very blessed when their family settles in and begins to share that touch.

God be with you Tom and Lois and family.

Friends

I have commented many times on this blog of just how blessed I am. I have the best friends anyone could ask for. I have received so many cards, phone calls. offers to help , and many many prayers since my cancer was announced. Tonight I want to share two items I have received.

On Sunday a friend came up to me at church and gave me a bracelet that she made. She makes beautiful jewelry all of the time and I must say I have always admired it. When she first learned of my cancer, she stated that she wanted to DO something. (So many of my friends have expressed that helpless feeling of wishing they could physically do something for me.) After thinking about that for a while, and thinking about cancer in general, she designed a special bracelet, and included the scripture from Isaiah about how God makes beauty from ashes. She got to thinking of how an ugly piece of carbon can be turned into a beautiful diamond, and how God could take something as ugly as cancer and turn it into a beautiful testimony. The bracelet shows rough black beads to represent the carbon, then beads which seem to be slightly polished and refined, then the crystals to represent diamonds. What an encouragement to me, as I wear this bracelet and think of just what God is able to do. She included a copy of Chrystal Lewis' song: Beauty for Ashes, and I have played it repeatedly in the car since Sunday.

I also have a special group of friends, which I have commented on before. We are all friends from church and get together often. They came and prayed for me the night I first got my diagnosis. One of them got the idea of a special ribbon which shows that they are my "Prayer Warriors" and will proceed into battle with their prayers. Another one of them made the ribbons and they plan to wear them to tell the world that they are my prayer warriors. That was such a tender, thoughtful thing to do. I am overwhelmed at the love I am being shown already.

Today I returned to school, and it was overwhelming there as well. So many came up to me to offer words of encouragement and to tell me they are praying.

I am seeing God "with skin on" everywhere I look.

Now for the latest:

Tomorrow morning I get to drink a "delicious" berry smoothie drink before I have my CT scan. I do not think that this berry smoothie will taste anything like the truly delicious ones that my youngest son makes, but it is suppose to help with the testing , so I will drink it. The CT will be of my neck, chest , and abdomen. Hopefully the results will be ready for the surgeon I am seeing on Wednesday.
